Basel River Cruise Port: Three Docks, Airports and Transfers
Plan your Basel river cruise port transfer by confirming the landing, comparing EuroAirport with Zurich, and arranging the hotel-to-ship ride.

The Basel river cruise port is not a single address. River ships dock at three passenger landings. Check your final cruise documents to find the exact address for your embarkation or disembarkation.
Basel is a beautiful city and I recommend spending few days here during your Rhine cruise. I plan a Basel arrival in three legs: airport to hotel, a night in Basel, then hotel to ship.
Quick Fit Check
| Your situation | Best starting plan | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| EuroAirport arrival and Basel stay | Take the Swiss-sector exit, then Line 50 or a car to your hotel. | Your hotel address, and whether you need help with your bags. |
| Zurich Airport arrival | Compare the direct train to Basel with a private car for the whole travel day. | Connections, the current train schedule, your bags, your hotel and the next-day ride to the ship. |
| One Basel hotel night | Book a central hotel close to your cruise dock. | Luggage storage, the pickup point and the final landing address. |
| Sightseeing on your own with light bags | Take the tram that serves your landing and walk the last stretch. | The walking route, track crossings, tram service changes and your all-aboard time. |
| Mobility equipment or several bags | Reserve a vehicle with room for every traveler, bag and device. | Number of steps, equipment handling, dimensions and your ship’s boarding instructions. |
| Cruise-line transfer package | Follow the package instructions and do not book a second transfer. | Airport, arrival date, meeting point, luggage deadline, hotel and final destination. |
Basel River Cruise Port: Three Landing Areas
These are the 3 landing areas in Basel, current as of October 7, 2026:
| Landing area | Published address | What to tell your driver |
|---|---|---|
| St. Johann passenger terminal, Steiger 1 and 2 | Corner of St. Johanns-Ring and St. Johanns-Rheinweg, 4056 Basel | Give both street names and say whether your ship is at Steiger 1 or 2. |
| Klybeckquai, Steiger and Platform 2 | Uferstrasse, 4057 Basel | Check whether your documents say Steiger Klybeckquai or Platform 2, and include your ship's name. |
| Dreiländereck passenger terminal | Westquaistrasse 39, 4057 Basel | This is the terminal's public address. The Dreiländereck landmark is at Westquaistrasse 75, and some ships' docking instructions use that number instead. Give the driver the address and meeting point from your ship's documents, not a landmark pin. |
Do not assume a cruise line always uses the same landing. Your final documents tell you where your ship docks on your date.
The Basel hotel-ship landings are designed for barrier-free access, and St. Johann has an elevator and escalator between levels. You will still need to verify your ship’s gangway and rules for mobility equipment. If you use a wheelchair, scooter or walker, check the device dimensions and boarding process with the cruise line, then pass the dimensions to your driver.
Confirm the Landing Before You Book a Car
Use these steps for embarkation and disembarkation:
- Find the landing name, full address, ship name and boarding time in your final cruise documents.
- Note whether the address is for embarkation, disembarkation or an off-site meeting point.
- Send the address and ship name to your hotel or driver, and ask them to repeat both in their confirmation.
- Check the landing again the day before for any update from the cruise line.
If your cruise ends in Basel, do not reuse a landing address from an earlier sailing. Book the pickup for your ship and date from the final disembarkation notice.
Getting Between Your Ship and Basel by Tram
The tram is an easy way to get around when you are sightseeing on your own, as long as you are comfortable walking and carrying your own bags. From Basel SBB railway station:
| Landing | Tram from Basel SBB | Get off at |
|---|---|---|
| St. Johann, Steiger 1 or 2 | Tram 11 toward St. Louis Grenze | St. Johannstor, then walk to the terminal. |
| Klybeckquai, Steiger or Platform 2 | Tram 8 toward Weil am Rhein | Kleinhüningen, then walk to the berth named in your documents. |
| Dreiländereck | Tram 8 toward Weil am Rhein | Kleinhüningen, then walk to the passenger landing. |
You can view more tram information at Basel Tourism's arrival guide.
The tram stop is not at the gangway. You will pass through a working port area and walk across railway tracks. Follow the signed footpath and your ship’s directions.
For sightseeing without suitcases, the tram is a good choice. If you are embarking with several bags, a walker or a scooter, I recommend a transfer booked for your exact boarding point.
October 2026 service note: Through October 23, 2026, tram 8 is diverted via Messeplatz, and replacement bus EV8 covers the Ciba–Claraplatz section. Check the journey planner for your travel date.
EuroAirport to a Basel Hotel or Ship
EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg is in France but has separate French and Swiss sectors, with clearly marked exits for each. For Basel, take the Switzerland exit. Bus Line 50 to Basel leaves from outside Arrivals on the Swiss side.
Here are some options from the airport.
- Bus Line 50: A good fit if you can manage your bags on the bus and get yourself from Basel SBB to your hotel.
- Taxi: Give the driver your hotel or landing address, not just the cruise line's name, and make sure the car fits your luggage and any mobility equipment.
- Private transfer: Book one when you want a driver waiting for you, a vehicle chosen for your group and one direct ride. My private-transfer guide explains what to include in the request.
- Cruise-line transfer: Use it when your package covers your airport, arrival date and meeting point.
EuroAirport Versus Zurich Airport
Do not choose between EuroAirport and Zurich on airfare alone. Compare the whole day: the flight, the ground journey, your bags, the hotel night and the ride to the ship.
| Decision factor | EuroAirport | Zurich Airport |
|---|---|---|
| Flight | Best when you can fly in close to Basel without a difficult connection. | Best when Zurich's flight schedule makes your whole travel day easier. |
| Public transport | Line 50 takes about 20 minutes to Basel SBB; then you still need to reach your hotel or landing. | I plan on about 75 minutes for the direct train, which runs hourly, plus platform time and the trip to your hotel in Basel. |
| By car | A car can take you straight to your hotel or landing. | A private car saves you from handling bags on the train. Compare its door-to-door time with the train's. |
| Bags and mobility | The bus means lifting bags on and off and making another connection. A car avoids both. | The train means moving bags across platforms. Choose a car if that is the hard part for you. |
| Hotel and ship | A Basel hotel night keeps your arrival day separate from embarkation. | The train ends in Basel, so you still need the ride from your hotel to the ship. |
Why I Recommend a Basel Hotel Night
I recommend one night in a Basel hotel between an international flight and embarkation. It gives you time to recover from a late flight or missed connection, and time to hear about any dock change before your driver sets off for the ship.
If you will arrive before check-in or leave after checkout, ask the hotel to hold your bags. On embarkation day, book a car to your specific landing with room for your group, bags and any mobility devices.
Overnight guests in Basel-Stadt receive the BaselCard from their accommodation in return for the city tax. It includes second-class public transportation in the covered zones, EuroAirport included, so I build it into your arrival plan. Your Basel hotel or Airbnb booking confirmation works as your ticket from the airport or train station to your accommodation, and you receive the card itself at check-in.

What to See Before or After Your Basel Cruise
Your hotel night is also a chance to enjoy Basel. Leave your bags with the hotel or another luggage storage service before you head out.
| Time you have | What I suggest |
|---|---|
| 2–3 hours | Start at the Rathaus on Marktplatz, take a short Old Town walk, then finish at Münsterplatz and the terrace behind Basler Münster, above the Rhine. |
| Half a day | Add a Rhine ferry crossing, lunch by the river and a stop for Basler Läckerli, the local spiced biscuits. |
| A full day | Add one museum: Kunstmuseum for art, Museum Tinguely for moving sculptures, or Basel Paper Mill for paper-making and printing. |
I would pick one museum rather than try to fit all three around a cruise departure. Kunstmuseum and Museum Tinguely are closed on regular Mondays, so check opening hours and holiday exceptions for your date.
The Old Town has cobblestones and slopes, especially around Spalenberg, so keep the walk short if those are difficult for you. Treat the cathedral tower as a separate decision: the climb is roughly 250 narrow steps. You can enjoy Münsterplatz and the terrace without climbing the tower.
Basel’s small Rhine ferries cross on the river’s current alone. Expect steps on the way down from the cathedral terrace, and know that ferry hours change with the season and river conditions.
If Dreiländereck is near your landing and you have time, stop at the viewpoint over the three-country border area.
On a Christmas-market sailing, Basel’s markets on Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz run from November 26 through December 23, 2026. Plan extra time to enjoy these markets!

Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the Basel river cruise port?
Basel has three river-cruise landings rather than one port: St. Johann, Klybeckquai and Dreiländereck. Your final cruise documents give the landing and full address for your ship and date.
Can I take a tram from Basel SBB to my river-cruise ship?
Yes. For St. Johann, take tram 11 toward St. Louis Grenze to St. Johannstor. For Klybeckquai or Dreiländereck, take tram 8 toward Weil am Rhein to Kleinhüningen. Either way, you walk the last stretch to your ship, so check for service changes on your travel date and book a car if luggage or mobility needs make that walk impractical.
Is EuroAirport or Zurich Airport better for a Basel river cruise?
EuroAirport, when its flights work for you: Line 50 reaches Basel SBB in about 20 minutes. Choose Zurich when its flights make for an easier travel day and you are fine with a direct train of about 75 minutes to Basel or a private car.
Should I stay in Basel before my river cruise?
Yes. I recommend one Basel hotel night after an international flight. A late flight then costs you rest time rather than embarkation, and you have time to confirm your landing before your driver sets off for the ship.
Does the EuroAirport bus go to the river-cruise ship?
No. Bus Line 50 runs from the Swiss sector of EuroAirport to Basel SBB railway station. From there, you still need a tram, taxi or car to your hotel or landing.
Can I use Basel public transport to reach my hotel on arrival day?
Yes, if you are staying overnight in Basel. Your hotel or Airbnb booking confirmation is your ticket from EuroAirport or the train station to your accommodation, and you receive the BaselCard at check-in.
