The Amsterdam river cruise port is not one terminal. River ships tie up at several berth areas along the IJ, the waterway behind Amsterdam Centraal, and the port reserves a berth for each call. Your ship’s berth name and street address are in your final cruise documents. Confirm both before you book a transfer or decide that a hotel is “near the port.”
I recommend planning an Amsterdam embarkation in three legs: Schiphol to your hotel, at least one night in the city, then hotel to the confirmed berth. That gives you a buffer for flight delays and time to check for a berth change before you leave the hotel.
Check whether your documents name a river berth, Passenger Terminal Amsterdam or IJmuiden’s Felison terminals. IJmuiden is a separate coastal port used by ocean cruises marketed as Amsterdam; directions for that journey do not apply to a central river berth. PTA also has river berths, so use the berth number and access instructions as well as the terminal name.
Quick Fit Check
| Your situation | Best starting plan | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Flying into Schiphol with a hotel stay | Train or car to your hotel, then walk, use public transport or book a car to the confirmed berth. | Your hotel address, luggage storage, the full route with bags and the final berth address. |
| Arriving by train from elsewhere in Europe | Get off at Amsterdam Centraal, then walk, take the tram or take a taxi to the berth in your documents. | Which station exit faces your berth, and whether you can carry every bag on that walk. |
| Several bags or mobility equipment | Book one vehicle from your door to the berth, sized for every traveler, bag and device. | Where the vehicle can stop, the gangway, and whether your ship is moored beside another ship. |
| Cruise-line transfer package | Follow the package instructions and do not book a second car. | The airport, arrival date and time window it covers, the meeting point and the luggage deadline. |
| You booked an ocean cruise | Follow your sailing’s instructions for the city ocean terminal or IJmuiden/Felison. | The exact port and terminal; central river-berth directions do not cover IJmuiden. |
Amsterdam River Cruise Port Berths
As of October 19, 2026, Cruise Port Amsterdam’s river berth list shows these passenger berth areas:
| Berth area | Published address | What it means for your plan |
|---|---|---|
| Ruijterkade West (berths IJRW 2–6) | De Ruijterkade 5, 1013 AA Amsterdam | Five berths share this quay. Give your driver the berth number and ship name, not just the street. |
| Ruijterkade Oost (berths IJRO 1–4) | De Ruijterkade 153, 1011 AC Amsterdam | Same street, different end: number 153, not 5. Send your driver the house number and berth number from your documents. |
| River berths at Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA LP1–LP4) | Piet Heinkade 27, 1019 BR Amsterdam | River berths at the ocean terminal’s address. As of October 20, 2026, Cruise Port Amsterdam puts the terminal about a 15-minute walk from Centraal’s north (IJ-side) exit, or one stop on tram 26 toward IJburg to Muziekgebouw/Bimhuis. |
| Westerdoksdijk | Westerdoksdijk 40, 1013 AE Amsterdam | Westerdoksdijk has its own street address. Send your driver this address, not “De Ruijterkade.” |
| Coenhaven | Westerhoofd 1, 1013 BS Amsterdam | A specialized harbor berth. I recommend booking a vehicle here and sending the driver the exact address from your documents. |
| Tolhuis and Minervahaven | Buiksloterweg 7, 1031 CC and Minervahavenweg 17, 1013 AR | Listed for bike-and-boat ships only. These matter if you booked a bike-and-boat trip, not a standard river cruise. |
De Ruijterkade is a common answer, but not a guaranteed one. Berths are reserved per call, not owned by a brand. Your last sailing, or a friend’s sailing on the same ship, does not tell you where your ship docks on your date.
Confirm Your Berth Before You Book a Car
- Find the berth name, street address, ship name and boarding time in your final cruise documents.
- Check that the ship name and sailing date match your booking. Two ships on one quay share a street address, so the ship name is what your driver looks for.
- Send the address, berth number and ship name to your hotel or driver, and ask them to repeat all three in their confirmation.
- Recheck the berth the day before for any update from the cruise line.
- Keep the cruise line’s day-of-travel contact number in your hand luggage, not in a checked bag.
If your cruise ends in Amsterdam, book the pickup from your disembarkation notice. Do not reuse the embarkation address from an earlier sailing on the same ship.
Schiphol to Your Hotel or Ship
Schiphol’s railway station sits below the terminal, and NS trains run direct to Amsterdam Centraal. As checked on October 23, 2026, NS lists about 17 minutes for the journey. That is station to station: add time for your ticket, getting your bags to the platform, and the walk, tram or taxi to your hotel or berth. Check the timetable for your travel date before you leave.
Compare the whole journey, not the train time:
- Train plus walk, tram or taxi: Choose this if you are traveling light and can lift your bags onto the train and through Centraal. Ask your hotel which station exit to use.
- Taxi: Schiphol has an official taxi rank. Give the driver the full hotel or berth address, not the cruise line’s name, and check that the car fits your bags and any mobility equipment.
- Private transfer: Book this when you want a driver waiting at arrivals, a vehicle chosen for your group and one direct ride. My private-transfer guide explains what to put in the request.
- Cruise-line transfer: Use it when the package covers your airport, arrival date and landing time. Confirm the meeting point before you fly.
I recommend arriving at least one day before embarkation. A hotel night gives you a buffer for a delayed flight or missed connection. If you must arrive on boarding day, confirm the latest boarding time and transfer arrangements with the cruise line before booking the flight.
From Your Amsterdam Hotel to the Ship
Choose your hotel area for the stay you want: museums, canals or a quiet street. Plan the hotel-to-ship move after the berth is confirmed. A hotel close to one berth address tells you nothing about the others, so do not pay extra for a room “near the cruise port” before you know which quay you need. For how many nights to add before or after the cruise, see my Rhine river cruise extensions guide.
Before embarkation day, run through this checklist:
- Bags: If you cannot carry every bag yourself for the whole route, from hotel door to gangway, book a car.
- Station exits and lifts: If you are going via Centraal, ask which exit faces your berth and whether that route has lifts as well as stairs.
- Where a vehicle can stop: Ask your driver to confirm where they can stop near your berth and how far you walk from there to the gangway.
- Early luggage drop: Ask the hotel to hold your bags after checkout, and ask the cruise line whether it accepts bags before boarding time.
- Gangway and rafted ships: River ships moor side by side at a busy quay, and you then walk through another ship to reach yours. If you use a wheelchair, scooter or walker, ask the cruise line about the gangway and rafting at your berth, then pass the device dimensions to your driver.
If mobility is the deciding factor for the whole trip, my guide to river cruises for seniors with limited mobility covers ship and itinerary choice before you book.
Getting Into Amsterdam From Your River Berth
For a day ashore without suitcases, walking or public transport can be the easiest choice from a central berth. Check the route between your exact quay and Centraal’s IJ-side exit. Ruijterkade West, Ruijterkade Oost, Westerdoksdijk and the PTA river berths have different approaches; the PTA terminal’s roughly 15-minute walk is not a walking time for every berth. For Coenhaven, I recommend arranging a vehicle.
Use the GVB journey planner for your berth address and travel date before choosing a bus, tram or metro. A GVB day ticket covers GVB services, including the metro, but not NS trains between Schiphol and Amsterdam. Choose it for several city journeys, not as an airport rail ticket. Keep your route back to the ship and boarding deadline with you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do river cruise ships dock in Amsterdam?
At one of several berth areas along the IJ: Ruijterkade West, Ruijterkade Oost, the river berths at Passenger Terminal Amsterdam, Westerdoksdijk or Coenhaven. Your final cruise documents name the berth and street address for your ship and date.
Do river cruise ships always dock at De Ruijterkade?
No. De Ruijterkade is a common berth, but the port reserves berths per call, and river ships also dock at Passenger Terminal Amsterdam, Westerdoksdijk and Coenhaven. Use the address in your final documents and recheck it the day before.
Is the train from Schiphol the easiest way to reach my river ship?
Only if you travel light. The train runs direct from the station below Schiphol’s terminal to Amsterdam Centraal, and you still need a walk, tram or taxi from Centraal to your hotel or berth. With several bags or mobility equipment, book one vehicle from door to door.
Can I fly into Schiphol on my embarkation day?
I recommend arriving at least one day early. If you must fly in on embarkation day, confirm the latest boarding time and transfer arrangements with the cruise line before booking your flight. An overnight stay provides a buffer for delays; it cannot guarantee that a disrupted journey will not cost you the sailing.
Can I walk from Amsterdam Centraal to my river cruise ship?
Yes, if your ship is at a central river berth and you can manage your bags along the full route. Check the route from Centraal’s IJ-side exit to your exact quay: Ruijterkade West, Ruijterkade Oost, Westerdoksdijk and PTA have different approaches. The port’s roughly 15-minute walk describes the PTA terminal, not every river berth. Arrange a vehicle for Coenhaven or when the walk is impractical with your bags or mobility needs.
